The probability of going to Starbucks and having to wrestle an armchair from some drain-pipe-pants wearing hipster just increased ten-fold. In fact it may be now be guaranteed. Starting July 1st, 2010 Starbucks will begin providing free WiFi to its US patrons who think that buying one coffee equates to the rightful, four-hour occupation of the uber-comfortable armchair seating. If you ask us, this is a huge mistake. Here’s a new sign you’re likely to see in a Starbucks window sometime soon: “Help Wanted: Bouncer.”

A brief, but touching message appeared on the web site of our favorite comedy nerds, www.timanderic.com, announcing the passing of one of their go-to greats: Richard Dunn. Richard was certainly best known for the work he did with Tim & Eric, appearing in most of everything they’ve ever produced - from animated cameos in Tom Goes to the Mayor, to internet “talk show” Tim & Eric Nite Live and of course the Adult Swim mega-sensation, Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
The Comedy of Tim & Eric may someday be likened to the painting philosophy of Salvador Dali. To them surreality is but a foggy checkpoint on a road leading somewhere much deeper and often darker. Despite this, Richard’s presence (though apparently frail) was always fortified by a grandfatherly innocence and this juxtaposition became a key ingredient in the Tim & Eric recipe for creation.

It has recently come to the attention of the NerdNews editors that we have recently lost a VIN (Very Important Nerd.) Chris Haney was half of the team who invented the board game which quickly became the cornerstone of countless Nerd parties - Trivial Pursuit. He was just 59 years old.
We think a perfect way to honour his memory, and his contribution to “our thing” would be to hold a memorial game of TP (any version will do.) If you really want to intimidate your would-be players bring up the idea with this bit of trivia, “Guess who recently passed away?”
Hopefully you already know about GoodSearch.com, but somehow this one passed us by until today. GoodSearch is a Yahoo! powered search engine that will donate about $0.01 to a charity of your choosing each and every time you search. It’s quite likely that your charity of choice is already involved - and GoodSearch will set a cookie so that you only have to tell them once. A big thanks to those amazing people at the Progeria Research Foundation for turning us onto GoodSearch.
While we probably aren’t going to stop using Google, maybe what we will do is start tithing our searches?

Check out this agonizing assortment of tooth-tingling torture devices - Yeow! Some of the old favorites are painfully present, such as the Iron Maiden, and a couple variations of The Stocks but what’s catching us (and its easy to miss) is the three foot golf tee looking gadget (gouge-it?) Often times its the simple pointy things in life that make a palatial imagination run wild away.

A disappointing day of news if you’re a fan of (and yes, you should be) of our favorite nerdy girl, Sarah Silverman - it was announced officially that her always out-there television show, The Sarah Silverman Program would not be returning for a fourth season on Comedy Central. Well, Comedy Central, we hope you walk too close to the edge of a big cliff and die. It’s bad enough that the funniest people of our time only have a couple of places to turn to reach a wide audience, but it’s even worse that you’re one of them!
Sarah, we love you!
The people who brought us the original Ant Farm are back with an illuminating and energy-efficient way of observing your ant slaves as they toil and tunnel through the transparent, nutrient rich gel. It’s break resistant, so there’s no need to worry about any adventurous escapees!
